This surprising structure is the result of a Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling of a porous silicon nanowire carpet.

Their low thermal conductivity produces a direct ablation in the region of exposure to the ion beam, and a coalescence and melting of the nanowires at the edge of the irradiation, so producing a disquieting smile. This microphone won a prize at MRS meeting 2016.
