What are nanowires?

30-01-2021

The international research on Nanowires has incredibly grown in the last 10 years due to the intrinsic properties of their geometrical parameters, exhibiting features typical of a 1-Dimensionality system, and also thanks to the wide range of application fields in which they are demonstrating efficiency. Energy Harvesting is one of the most intriguing fields, but also Thermo-Electrical systems, solid state batteries,

are structures in cylindrical form with straight or curved aspects.

They have lengths in the range of a few micrometers (a micrometer is one millionth of a meter) to centimeters, while their diameters are in the nanometer range (a nanometer is one billionth of a meter).

Nanowires can be constituted of different materials, such as silicon and zinc oxide, and can be synthesized or fabricated with many techniques.

In the EMPIR Nanowires project many of these materials and techniques will be used for energy harvesting applications.
